Tough times call for reassessment, introspection, and adapting to change as it comes. The games industry in particular has been experiencing this during 2023 and 2024. As our Games Job Fair event is going through its own changes this year, we are more than ever aware of the gravity of our presence in the lives of job seeking game developers.

Games Job Fair Spring 2024 LITE was not what we had originally planned to do this April, but if adapting to change is the lesson, we are proud to have led by example. 6 Studios got together with over 1700 gamedev and tech talents from all over the world and over 150 job seekers joined us onsite in Helsinki.

Excellent Unity and Sloyd Challenge Entries!
Our community professionals went above and beyond in challenging our judges this Spring, as we had phenomenal entries for the Unity Programming Challenge and the Sloyd Rendering Challenge. These challenges are a great opportunity for talents to showcase their skills in various disciplines like programming, art, game design etc. They are also a learning experience to get a feel for what would be expected of them when going through a recruitment process. As test assignments are a very common way of evaluating the skills of an applicant, we work together with studios in shaping these tasks to be as close to them as possible. This is especially important for juniors, who lack experience with recruitment processes at various companies.

Tasked with creating an endless runner, the coding game was strong in our attending programmers, much to the delight of us and judges Thomas Winkley and Sourav Chatterjee of Unity, and Robin Vonsien of InnoGames. The Code Review session was informative, and thorough.

On the other hand, artists were tasked with creating a fun adventure for Sloyd's mascot, Floyd. They delivered that and then some. Floyd found himself in the wild west, spooky forests, out at sea, and even in space!

Judges and us were very pleased with high standards of the submissions as the quality and quantity get better and better every time!

We would like to congratulate the winners and say THANK YOU to all the challenge participants! It was amazing to see your talents in action.

A Vibrant and Unifying Onsite in Helsinki
Thanks to the City of Helsinki and Game Makers of Finland, we had the opportunity to gather over 150 onsite talents in Kamppi's Innovation Home on April 19th for a productive day of CV and Portfolio reviews. With 12 recruiters and lead artists from studios such as Rovio, Housemarque, Nitro Games, and more volunteering their time and services, we wanted to give our talents the best advice for moving forward during this time of uncertainty.

The recent market crisis has been difficult for our field, but the games industry reminds us time and time again that we are a tight-knit community that steps up for its members. Whatever challenges you are currently facing, we hope our Games Job Fairs can keep reminding you that you are not alone, and being a safe haven where you can still connect, discover, and evolve.

In times like these, with everything happening in the world and our industry, it's easy to feel down and worried. Taking care of ourselves is crucial, but it's also important to remember that brighter days are ahead. Game developers are a resilient and passionate bunch. We believe in you, and we want you to believe in yourselves too.

At the Games Job Fair Spring 2024, we wanted to share a vital message: don't lose hope. Take time to rest and recharge, organize your priorities, and keep learning and growing. Whether you keep pushing forward now or return later, the industry will welcome you. Opportunities are waiting, and yours will come when the time is right. Remember, this journey is a marathon, not a sprint. We hope you all feel empowered and refreshed to continue this journey with us.
